Travel Essentials for Women – Which Best Fit Your Lifestyle?

I understand that packing for travel can be stressful and overwhelming. Have you ever wondered what other women consider essential for their travels? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Receiving advice from others with more experience can help you prepare better for your travels. To develop this comprehensive list of travel essentials for women, feedback from 25 experienced travelers contributed to my research. The list also includes items I deem essential based on my 40 years of experience traveling for work and vacation.

Travel essentials for women

We focused on traveling light during our last trip to Spain (and several previous trips), but I realized that not everyone wants to travel like that. For this post, the focus is not on traveling light but on what experienced travelers see as their essential travel items.

Food for Thought

In the poll, a professional organizer said: I’m a notorious “not-light” packer.  I took three (different, of course) hair dryers and a full makeup mirror on our European vacation because they were essential to me.

When I read this, it confirmed my view that we all have different lifestyles and travel styles. Read the list to find the ones that apply to your lifestyle and travel needs.  Even if you are a light packer like me, you might find a new gem that will be part of your future travel essentials.

Download the easy-to-select shortened packing list here. Ensure you don’t forget these travel essentials for women at home.

Planning What To Pack

To find your perfect list of essentials, consider:

  • When you will travel (summer, winter, etc.). Packing for a ski trip is different from packing for a beach vacation. That essential bug spray you need mid-summer is unnecessary for a ski vacation.
  • Also, consider if you have the funds to pay for check-in bags. If you do, take all 3 hairdryers, but if you don’t, consider items that will allow you to travel light.
  • Where do you plan to go? e.g., will you have access to stores to buy things you did not pack, or will you be on a safari for a week?

Travel Must-have’s

Travel must-haves did not receive much attention because we all know we must pack them. However, I added these items so you don’t forget them. Make sure you know TSA rules to make passing through airport security easier.

  • Visa, Passport, or ID (depending on where you travel to) and Boarding pass. Keep this handy to go through security.
  • Cash and or Debit and Credit Cards (Credit cards are safer)
  • A copy of key travel documentation (e.g., copies of where you will stay, travel insurance, a list of people’s phone numbers…)
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste (don’t laugh, it’s the first thing I do when I wake up on the plane)
  • Your packing list – take this with you; it serves as a reminder of what needs to be in your bag when you pack up to return home or to the next hotel or accommodation. The chance of forgetting something might be smaller in a hotel room, but if you rent an apartment or home, the risk is higher.

Safety and Security

Airport Security

Navigating airport security efficiently requires having certain travel essentials readily accessible. Here’s a list of items and tips that can help streamline the process:

Remember, security regulations can vary by country and airport, so it’s always a good idea to check the latest guidelines of the TSA (or the relevant authority in your country) and your airline before traveling. Organizing these items and within easy reach can significantly reduce the stress and time spent at airport security checkpoints.

Carbon Monoxide Detector

Recently, there have been many news articles about people who rent a vacation home and who died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

I would never have thought to travel with this item, so thanks to a friend who recommended it. It is now one of my essential items when I travel. There are many options, and they don’t break the bank. Remember that lithium-iron batteries cannot be in your checked luggage. Some options can be checked, or our case I selected one that can go in our hand-luggage as we travel with hand luggage most of the time.

Hidden Pocket Scrunchies

I love the scrunchy. Not only is it functional to get that hair tied up, but it also has a hidden pocket for a small amount of cash or lip balm. It is not big enough to take a credit card, but you can easily add money, car keys, and lip balm. I like to always have cash stashed somewhere other than a wallet, and this works perfectly.

Air Tags

AirTags are made by Apple Inc. They were first introduced by Apple in April 2021. These small tracking devices integrate with Apple’s Find My network, allowing users to locate lost items through Bluetooth technology and the vast network of Apple devices in use globally. AirTags are designed to work seamlessly with various Apple products, including iPhones and iPads.  Apple Air tags have been our saving grace more than once on a trip.

These Air Tags are so essential to our travel that my husband made little leather bags for them.

Travel Essentials for Women - Apple Air Tag

What Can An Apple Airtag Do?

  • Locating Lost Items: The primary function of AirTags is to help you keep track of and find personal items like keys, wallets, or bags. If you misplace an item with an AirTag attached, you can use Apple’s Find My network to locate it.
  • Travel Convenience: Travelers often use AirTags to keep track of their luggage. An AirTag in a suitcase can help locate lost or delayed luggage during air travel.
  • Theft Prevention and Recovery: While AirTags are not anti-theft devices, they can assist in recovering stolen items. If an item with an AirTag is stolen, its location can be tracked, increasing the chances of recovery.
  • Pet Tracking: Some people attach AirTags to their pet’s collar to track them if they wander off or get lost.
  • Personal Safety: People sometimes use AirTags discreetly when they feel their safety might be at risk, such as when traveling in unfamiliar areas.

Respect Others Privacy

It’s important to note that while AirTags are helpful for these purposes, they should be used responsibly, respecting privacy and legal considerations. Misusing AirTags to track individuals without consent is a serious concern against Apple’s intended product use.

O Ring Opening Snap Trigger

O Ring Spring Opening Snap Trigger

TIP: To prevent pick-pocketers, you must make access to your valuables more complex than the next person. We use these ring carabiners through zipper ends. Although it is easy to open in a controlled environment, it is not easy to open on a packed train or any other areas these thieves frequent.

Pacsafe Anti-theft Convertible Crossbody Purse

Packsafe has long been famous for its ability to make anti-theft purses and other bags that are not just functional but also fashionable.

There are many types of bags, and the images on the left are only to pique your interest. If you are looking for a good quality bag that will give you peace of mind while traveling, look no further.

Items to Pack In Your Personal Item / Hand Luggage

Travel Essentials for Women

Best Airplane Snacks

Several of the study participants ranked travel snacks high on their list of essential travel items.

Airlines are known for providing little food or snacks during a plane ride, and if there is turbulence, you might get nothing. Often, these snacks are only available at an extra fee. This can be a problem, especially during long cross-Atlantic flights, if you travel with kids, are a picky eater, or you need to eat often due to health reasons. Don’t be hangry (hungry and angry) when you arrive at your destination, and that’s not a good way to start your vacation.

Read more about why you should pack snacks, which snacks to pack, and some great tips. Get more information on the TSA website on “what can I bring” on a plane.

Snack Ideas for The Airplane

Ideal snacks should allow for convenience, mess-free eating, and compliance with airline regulations. Remember that you want to avoid taking snacks that need refrigeration. Some snack ideas that work well for air travel are chips, fresh fruit, chocolates, and gummies (which I prefer because they are not messy to eat). Trail mix, cheese sticks, veggies, and hummus. Meat products with long shelf life, like salami or jerky (or biltong if you are a South African), sandwiches with your favorite filling, and a homemade salad.

Be considerate with the snacks you choose so that it is not too smelly. Avoid curries and garlic.

Pack the snacks in a bag that can be thrown away, or if you plan to use the bag multiple times on your trip, take a small snack bag.

Travel Pillow – Travel Essentials for Women

I remember my dad always traveling with his pillow. But to his credit, it was a small pillow that only took up a little space. He was lost without it. There are many styles of travel pillows or neck pillows, and each person needs to find out which one works for them.

Read the reviews of the 20 top neck pillows.

Cabeau’s Travel Pillow – a Travel Essential for Women

This is my pillow of choice. It is perfect for sleeping on the plane and folds up small. It supports your neck and lets you reach the other side without neck and back pain.

The travel case clips to your hand luggage, making it easily accessible without taking up valuable space

Cabeau's Travel Pillow

Trtl Pillow

This is pronounced “turtle” pillow and kind of looks like a turtle’s neck. One of our study respondents reported that this is the first thing she packs. Although the neck pillow/neck brace is slightly odd-looking, she cannot sleep without it. She said, “I just don’t care that this pillow gets a lot of stares; for my comfort, it is worth it.” The original pillow is a bit pricy, but she swears it is worth more.  The “pillow” is a brace covered in a soft fleece scarf to hold the neck stable.

Trtl Neck Cushion

The pillow did not work for me, but Johan used it of a flight to Europe and loved it.

Best Blanket for Long Flights

EverSnug Travel Blanket and Pillow

L like this website for its reviews of the best blanket for long flights.

This Premium Soft 2-in-1 Airplane Blanket with Soft Bag Pillowcase, Hand Luggage Sleeve, and Backpack Clip

TIP: This blanket can also be used as a pillow if it is not needed to keep you warm

Best Travel Wrap

Depending on your chosen style, a travel wrap can serve multiple purposes. It can be a “blanket” around your shoulders or knees, or it can serve as a scarf. Most religious buildings in Europe require that women’s shoulders be covered, so the travel wrap can also serve that purpose. Make it a mission to find the best travel wrap that suits your style.

Small Mirror

Consider two sizes of mirrors. 1 – a small compact mirror that can fit in your purse or cross-body bag, and 2 – a slightly larger mirror that you can pack in your carry-on or checked bag. Here are some of the benefits of the slightly larger mirror.

Venigo Illuminating Mirror has been designed to provide powerful 10X magnification and an ultra-bright light source to allow you to view specific areas of your face up close. The additional illumination helps to reflect actual colors – ideal for flawless hair and makeup under any lighting conditions.

  • It’s easy to attach to and remove from the bathroom mirror, so it takes no counter space.
  • It makes even poor hotel bathroom lighting workable!
  • Because it’s suction, you can attach it to the glass on an art piece in a hotel room to give travel mates access to the bathroom while you do makeup elsewhere.

Sanitizing wipes

The sanitizing wipes are great for wiping your chair handles and drop-down table on the plane. One correspondent also mentioned that she takes this to the plane bathroom and wipes the sink area before she puts anything on it. These wipes come in smaller packages for travel and can have different fragrances.

Stain Remover for Clothes

I love the Tide to Go pen—it’s small and TSA-approved. I always carry one of these with me to clean spills on my clothes or red wine from a shirt on a bumpy trip.

Ear Plugs

There are several options for earplugs to help with noise cancellation on the plane, to help you sleep, or, for some, to allow us to focus on work while traveling.

Ear plugs for the plane

Tozo T12 Wireless Earbuds

This might be a good option if you love multifunction earbuds that play music but can also be worn while you sleep. They are affordable, at under $40 per pair.

Loop Quiet Equinox Earplugs

These soft earplugs are ideal to sleep with and do not break the bank.

Going Low Tech for Your Ear Plugs

The Vegpoet Reusable Moldable Silicone Earplugs Noise Cancelling Reduction earplugs are low cost and easy to mold to the shape of your ear. They are perfect for keeping airplane noise out, and the low cost means that it is not the end of the world if you lose one.

Reading Material

Bible

When I am not concerned about weight, the paper Bible is the first item in the bag. I love my paper Bible, but it is hefty when I want to travel light. An online Bible app is a good alternative when you want to travel light. Apps like YouVersion ( https://www.youversion.com) allow you to download the Bible, and you do not need internet access to read it. You only need battery power or a backup to charge your electronic device.

Finding that special book to read while traveling is a very personal thing. Some of us like murder mysteries, while others like something lighter or a good biography. Do a little research and find that perfect book you can carry. Read this list of 50 best books to read while traveling.

Best Books to Read While Traveling

I was surprised how many women had a “paper” book on their top 3 essentials when traveling. The feedback indicated that a book allows one to disengage from electronic devices. You might end up with nothing to do for hours. For example, if your electronic device runs out of power and there is no place to recharge or delays, to name a few.  Nowadays, people are not used to just sitting around, so a book is a good option to keep you entertained when your electronics are not working.

Browse through this list of 50 best books to read while traveling and select one that fits your taste in books.

Travel Journal

I love to write when I travel. It is “fodder” for the next blog and reminds me of what we did on the trip.

Walking the Camino de Santiago, you can be on your feet for between 5 and 10 hours a day, which leaves you a lot of time to reflect. I love to get to the end of the day and reflect on my day and life by writing in my journal.  My favorite is The Journey Within by Rick and Erica at Camino Tellers.  This journal was created to be small and lightweight. Ideal for packing light when walking the Camino de Santiago. But the journal can be used on any vacation, so don’t miss out if you are not walking the Camino de Santiago.

Food Journal – a Travel Essential for Women that Consider Themselves Foodies

Someone responded by saying she was a foodie and used the journal  “My Best Travel Secrets As A Foodie.” This journal serves as a food-lover travel journal and trip planner. The travel-size notebook can be used to write about your food experiences and record the best food memories in one place! Needless to say, I had to get it too.

Lightweight Packable Jacket

Puffer Jacket. Travel Essentials for Women

Amazon Essentials Women’s Lightweight Long-Sleeve Water-Resistant Packable Puffer Jacket

Select a small, packable, and lightweight. It will not see you through a ski vacation, but it is perfect as a layer mid-winter or a light jacket for the rest of the year. The jacket is available in multiple colors and sizes.

The jacket comes with a small carrying bag – the jacket fits snuggly in the bag.

Travel Foot Hammock – Travel Essentials for Short Women

NECOLE Airplane Footrest

If you are like me and your legs are just long enough to reach the ground, you know how tired you are after a ten-hour flight because you can never sit with your feet comfortably on the floor. This airplane footrest is a game changer. I bought my first foot hammock one a year ago, and although it worked somewhat, no flat footplate added extra stress to my ankles. This new one with a flat bottom works so much better.

Small Toiletry Bag

Decide what items are critical to have close by on the plane. Remember that you are only allowed 3 small bottles of liquid, each less than 3.4 oz or 100 ml. All liquids on the plane must be placed in a clear quart-size plastic bag. Then I looked at my toiletry bag and decided what I needed on the plane. Often, these non-liquid items fit in another clear bag.

Electronics to Keep Close By

Electronics are part of our daily life; if you are not careful, half your bag can be filled with electronics. Consider your needs carefully. Do you require a laptop, a Kindle, a handheld device, and a phone? Remember, each device comes with cables and sometimes an extra charger. Below is a list of the favorites from our research participants.

Soundcore

Soundcore is one of the top brands of active noise-canceling headphones. Although other companies like Bose make fabulous noise-cancelling headphones, they can sometimes be cost-prohibitive. The Space One Active Noise Cancelling Headphones are only $150.

eReader

Whether you prefer a Kindle and iPad or any similar eReader, make sure it is charged and packed nearby. On longer flights, some planes have chargers, so make sure you also have a charging cable.

Medication and Medical Equipment

You must have enough medication for 24 hours in your hand luggage. To get you through the flight or a night in the hotel until you can get to the pharmacy at your destination. Always take prescription medication in their original containers with you on the plane. Several respondents also suggested adding a band-aid or two to the medical kit. Have a doctor’s note for any liquid medications larger than 3.4 ounces.

Travel C-pap

For those suffering from sleep apnea, this machine is literally a lifesaver.  If possible, buy a travel c-pap; it takes much less space than a conventional c-pap. Always carry your C-pap in your hand luggage. Do NOT add it to your checked luggage.  Some travel c-pap’s work with batteries and can be used when you sleep on the plane. The photo below shows the size difference between a normal c-pap and a travel c-pap.

Full size c-pap vs. Travel C-pap

Sleep Mask

A sleep mask is great on a plane when you want to try and get a little bit of that forty-winks. It is also a game changer when you stay in accommodation with more light in the room than you are used to. I love my weighted face mask.  When on a plane, I only wear the outside silky mask, but when I am in bed, I add the weighted insert.

Nail File

We have all been there; your nail gets a rough edge, driving you crazy. Imagine being on a long cross-Atlantic flight with no nail file. Take a nail file to reshape your nails or smooth any rough edges.

Water Bottle

Pack an empty water bottle to go through security. You can fill this bottle inside the airport, either from a water fountain or bottled water you buy at the airport.

Clothes and Shoes

The best advice I can give as a frequent traveler is that you need to start with your packing list. Determine where you will go and what the weather will be. Ask yourself, what do I plan to do when I am there. For example, if you want to walk ten miles a day, the high heels might not need to go.

Capsule Wardrobe

Capsule Wardrobe - Travel Essentials for Women

What is a capsule wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe showed up on several of the experienced traveler’s lists.

According to Nordstrom and Wikipedia A capsule wardrobe is a minimalist collection of clothes that can be put together in different ways to cover a variety of outfits and occasions. The aim is to pack items that will allow for an outfit suitable for any occasion without packing excessive clothing items. This is usually achieved by buying what are considered “key” or “staple” items in coordinating colors that can mix and match.

For me, key items in a capsule wardrobe are 2 pairs of shoes, a demin, and a pair of black pants that can be dressed up or down. Two or three basic tops, two jackets, and a little black dress 😉

Shoes

A pair of great walking shoes. We walk at least 3 miles a day when at home and many more miles when on vacation. My favorite walking shoe brand is Hoka’s. If you are looking for a walking shoe that is a little more dressy, consider Bzees shoes or sandals – they are stylish, comfortable for walking, and washable. For those who like to travel light, Allbirds make great walking shoes.

Airbirds lightweight walking shoes

Flip flops are ideal for beach vacations, not so much to walk the cobble streets of Europe.

Rain Jacket and/or Poncho

Poncho that covers a backpack

I take a rain jacket for everyday use (OK, I only use it when it rains), but when we walk the Camino de Santiago with backpacks, I like to wear a poncho that covers my backpack.

The PTEROMY Hooded Rain Poncho is ideal. It covers the backpack completely with no seams for the water to penetrate. It is lightweight and ideal for hiking and camping.

Anti-chafing Shorts

These boy shorts are ideal to wear when you walk long distances.

Socks

Despite their higher price tag, Merino wool socks offer several significant benefits that make them a worthwhile investment, especially for travelers and outdoor enthusiasts. Here are some compelling reasons to choose merino wool socks:

  1. Temperature Regulation: Merino wool is known for its exceptional ability to regulate temperature.
  2. Moisture-Wicking and Breathability: Merino wool can absorb a high amount of moisture — up to 30% of its weight — and wick it away from the skin. This keeps your feet dry and comfortable, reducing the risk of blisters, especially during long walks or hikes. It prevents the feet from feeling overheated.
  3. Odor Resistance: Merino wool contains natural antimicrobial properties, which help prevent the growth of odor-causing bacteria.
  4. Softness and Comfort: Unlike traditional wool, merino wool fibers are extremely fine and soft, making them comfortable against the skin without the itchiness associated with coarser wool types
  5. Quick-Drying: If you need to wash your socks on the go, merino wool dries much faster than cotton or other materials, particularly useful for travelers or outdoor adventurers.
  6. Sustainability: Merino wool is a natural, renewable fiber, making it a more environmentally friendly choice than synthetic materials.
  7. Biodegradability: At the end of their lifespan, merino wool socks will naturally decompose, unlike synthetic alternatives that contribute to landfill waste.
  8. Comfort in Various Activities: Whether hiking, skiing, or simply exploring a new city, merino wool socks provide comfort, cushioning, and support for a wide range of activities.
Smartwool socks - travel essentials for women.

Layering

If you travel in the shoulder season, it can be hard to pack light. For example, you need to pack for winter and spring. To overcome this pack in layers. I always make sure that I have a Merino wool base layer. I like to choose a base layer that I can also wear as an outer layer, maybe adding a scarf and using that for an outer layer. Think carefully about how you can reuse different items for multiple outfits. I love this merino-tech shirt.

Health and Beauty

Do not pack your prescription medication in checked luggage; always have it in your carry-on or personal item you take on the plane.

When traveling, women must have a small, well-considered selection of emergency medications in their hand luggage. These can vary depending on personal health conditions and the destination, but generally, the following are recommended: Pain and fever relievers, antihistamines, and anti-diarrhea medication. Something for motion sickness, antacids, laxatives, stool softeners, and hydration salts. Something to help you sleep on long flights, throat lozenges, and personal prescriptions.

It’s essential to check the regulations of the countries you visit, as some over-the-counter medications in one country may be controlled substances in another. Always keep medications in their original packaging and consider carrying a doctor’s note for prescription drugs. If you have pre-existing medical conditions, consult your healthcare provider before traveling.

Travel Tweezers

If you want to look your best, get the essential grooming kit. Not only is this great for grooming, but you never know when you will need a tweezer to remove a thorn or pick up something small that fell.

Cleansing Balm

Although it is possible to buy this anywhere in the world, if you have your favorite makeup remover cleansing balm, stick with what you know will not irritate your skin. The last thing you want on your trip is to have a breakout because the new balm does not work with your skin.

Use a cleansing balm over cleansing wipes as it is not wasteful, travels well, and does a good job.

Pharmacy Natural Makeup Remover – Green Clean Makeup Meltaway Cleansing Balm Cosmetic, 100ml

Neutrogena Fragrance-Free Makeup Remover Wipes, Daily Facial Cleanser Towelettes, Gently Removes Oil & Makeup, Alcohol-Free Makeup Wipes. This is ideal for when you are on the plane.

Travel Perfume Atomizer

Portable Mini Refillable Perfume Atomizer, Spray Bottle, and a Pump Case for Travel

I am sure you can relate. You have our favorite bottle of perfume or multiple bottles of perfume. You love it so much that we got a big bottle (at least one more than 100 ml or 3.4oz.). So, how do you pack that bottle or multiple bottles? Or we might want to travel light; that big old bottle is too much. In steps, this pocket-size refillable perfume atomizer. Now, you can always have your favorite perfume on hand.

Scrunchi Hair Ties

Although I mention scrunchi hair ties here, you can take your favorite hair ties.

Hair Brush

Remember to take your favorite hair brush. Although this is easy to find in stores, if you have a special hair brush, pack it!

Best Travel Towel

This small Airlite Travel Towel is what you need when you are in a bind and no towels are available. It is small and quick dry and can be added to your tote for emergencies. The towel comes in two sizes.

Vicks VapoRub

I loved this idea. My husband always says I suffer from “hyper-sensitive nose disorder.” But I am particularly sensitive to smells. So this is a perfect solution that I have not thought of before. It will go in that carry-on bag. If decide to take a mask, or travel regulations require wearing a mask, it will also help with those smells, and you can spread some of the Vick on the inside of the mask.

Hard-Shell Checked Luggage

By far, the preferred style for check-in luggage is a hard-shell suitcase.  They protect the contents of a suitcase more.  Sometimes, soft-shell suitcases, bags, or duffel bags get stuck and ripped, and

Luggage Scale

Amazon Basics Portable Digital Luggage Weight Scale

Shopping is in most women’s DNA. This directly impacts the weight of our luggage as we seldom come home with fewer things than we go. With airlines charging crazy prices for extra luggage or overweight luggage, this cheap scale pays for itself the first time you are at the airport and your luggage is overweight. From personal experience, I know how hard it is to open your bag in front of other travelers to try and find some items that you can move to a different suitcase. Don’t let this happen to you.

Travel Toiletry Bag

BAGSMART Toiletry Bag

Finding the right makeup and/or toiletry bag is essential; you will use this daily. For those who bring a lot of toiletries, the bag below is a must-have and highly recommended by the professional organizer who participated in the polling.

There is no surprise here; the study participants loved a specific toiletry bag more than two other popular toiletry or cosmetic bags.

Your Personal Item

When selecting a bag to use as a personal item for air travel, the focus should shift slightly from a typical purse to something that maximizes storage while still fitting airline restrictions. Since airlines have different rules for the size and weight of a personal item, here’s what to consider:

  • Size and Airline Restrictions
  • Type of Bag
  • Organization and Accessibility
  • Durability and Material
  • Comfort in Carrying
  • Security Features
  • Versatility
  • Style

TIP 👀: Cheap airlines in Europe are even more strict about size and weight. They make their money by charging for other things that regular USA airlines don’t charge for.

Ultimately, the best bag for flying depends on your personal needs, the nature of your trip, and your style preferences. Check the airline’s guidelines regarding personal item dimensions and weight limits before choosing.

Types of Personal Items

  • Purse or an anti-theft purse –
  • Crossbody bags
  • Backpack
  • Tote Bag

Packing Cubes

I love them and can’t travel without them.

Packing Cubes - Travel Essentials for women

The advantages of using packing cubes are well documented. These cubes are incredibly useful as they keep your suitcase organized, preventing items from shifting around during travel. I particularly dislike instances when TSA agents open my bag and things scatter everywhere or when they rummage through my things and hand me back the bag to repack in front of strangers. With packing cubes, TSA agents can easily lift and move them around to locate specific items that show up on the scanner.

Over the years, I have traveled extensively for work, often staying in hotels for just one or two nights before moving on to the next location. These small cubes have been a game-changer for me, as they allow me to take my clothes out of my bag and store them neatly in a drawer, making it easier to stay organized and quickly pack up when it’s time to move on.

I’ve found the Eagle Creek brand to be the best, but there is decent, less expensive brands out there. Eagle Creek also makes compression packing cubes, that can be a big space saver.

Travel Laundry Bag

If you have enough space take a travel laundry bag. It comes in many styles and shapes. I like to keep my dirty laundry separate from my clean clothes. TIP: I use tags on my packing cubes and always have some tags that says “laundry.” I will just replace the tag on an empty packing cube with one that say laundry and reuse the packing cube.  This does save some space.

Laundry Sheets

TIP: if you plan to wash small items in a sink, cut the larger sheet into smaller pieces. Use only one of these smaller pieces when washing in a sink. This is a great space and weight saver if you travel for multiple weeks at a time like we did for our last trip to Spain. We traveled for 9 weeks and only took carry-on.

Fabric Softener Sheets

I put these sheets in my packing cubes and transfer them to the laundry bag as they fill up, which helps keep my clothes smelling fresh.

Electronics

Portable Charger or Power bank

Portable phone charger – A cute portable charger will fit in your pocket or bag. And you can also easily use your phone while it charges!

Induction charger

This three-in-one foldable magnetic wireless charger. Make sure that you select an induction charger that will work with your specific phone, smart watch etc.

Universal Adapter

Power Adapter - Travel Essentials for Women

When you travel often, buying a universal power adapter is best.  Over the years, we have collected many adapters for many countries. A lot of these adapters can now be replaced with a single adapter. The adapter now also allows USB and mini USB charging, so you do not need to bring your laptop to charge your accessories.

Get this two-pack: LENCENT International Type-C Foldable Power Plug with 4 Outlets, USB C Charger Adaptor, US to Most of Europe EU Iceland, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Cruise Approved.

Accessories

Travel Kits for Women

Consider taking one or more of these travel kits based on your lifestyle. A sewing kit is not just used to sew on that button or to help the seam. The needle can also be used for a multitude of other purposes. Other kits for consideration are a small makeup kit, a toothbrush kit, and a medical kit. There are even small watercolor travel kits that one of our respondents added to her list.

Conair Power Steam Travel Steamer

My mom never let us out of the house is we were not “perfectly pressed.” I know that there is less focus on ironing in the rat race that we call life, but you also do not want to look like you fell out of the laundry basket. I love my travel steamer. There are many brands on the market. Find the one that fits your lifestyle.

Sunglasses

It is ideal to get polarized sunglasses. And remember to pack it!

Jewelry

If you want to look your best, remember the jewelry. I travel with only one set of hoops and one chain. Once in a while, I would add a bracelet to the outfit. If you plan to visit places with lots of pickpockets, wear with costume jewelry. That way if somebody steals your jewelry it’s not a big loss.

Hats

There are different options for hats, some are more classy and others are just downright functional. Below are 2 recommendations from our experienced travelers.

Wallaroo Hat Company – Women’s Victoria Fedora – UPF 50+ Sun Protection, Packable Hat with a Wide Brim

Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure Hat

Travel Hat

Available from REI, this hat folds small and can be carried in your pocket. I love the spot to add your sunglasses. The wide brim protects your face from the sun. A long back flap protects your neck from harmful sun rays. This hat works very well when carrying a backpack, as the back has no rim, just the soft fabric extension. The ventilation panels on the side make it cool in the summer.

Bottle Opener

One responded added this to her list of must-have items. Remember that taking an opener with a corkscrew needs to be checked in your luggage. A bottle opener is great for those who like to buy a bottle of wine and go for a picnic and local delicacies in the park.

Bug Spray

This one made the list. I would buy it at my destination, but the traveler who added it to the list said that where she likes to travel, it is not always as readily available as here in the USA. So keep that in mind, depending where you go.

Umbrella – Travel Essentials for Women

Umbrella with a light

Lejorain Folding Reverse LED Umbrella – Compact Inverted Umbrella

The Led Reflective Windproof Automatic Travel Umbrella comes highly recommended. It’s 42 inches wide, perfect for two people to walk under. The umbrella is lightweight. This travel umbrella is the perfect companion for a woman on the move. It is not too large, is easy to open, has a flashlight in the handle, and provides enough coverage for two persons. We used this umbrella when we walked the Camino de Santiago and was up to the many rainy days we had.

There is also an option to buy a larger golf umbrella.

Travel Size Toiletries

This is particularly important if you only travel with carry-on, and you are not checking bags. TSA only allows 3 containers at 3.4 oz or 100ml per container. TIP: You cannot take a 5 oz container and say it is half full.

Quart Size Zip Lock Bag

Many airports (Heathrow tops the list here) expect liquids to be in a gallon-plastic bag. Make it easier on yourself and the rest of the people behind you, and have all those small travel-size liquids in a zipper bag ready to go through the scanner. It helps to only have liquids in this bag. Don’t add all your makeup to this bag.

Small Cooler Bag

“When I received this feedback from the poll, I was initially surprised. I wondered why someone would need a small cooler bag. However, after reaching out to the person who provided this input, it made sense.

TIP: for the trip back, fill this cooler with your breakable trinkets and souvenirs.

Tip: Pack some shirts or other clothing in the bag to not waste space.

Water Bottle

It’s important to stay hydrated when traveling. We always carry a water bottle with us.

Best Collapsible Water Bottle

There are many collapsible water bottles on the market. Find the one that fits your lifestyle best.
